Capello 'satisfied' with WC qualification

Fabio Capello said he was ‘satisfied’ after Russia qualified for next year’s World Cup with a 1-1 draw against 10-men Azerbaijan.

• Europe wrap

Group F leaders Russia headed into their final game of qualifying knowing that even a loss could still guarantee them a spot in Brazil.

And despite conceding a 90th minute equaliser, Capello’s men secured passage to their first World Cup finals since 2002 with an away point in the Bakcell Arena.

After the match, Capello said he retain “positive memories” from a qualifying process that saw the Russians beat the Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal squad to top spot.

"I'm satisfied with our performance in this qualifying campaign," Capello said.

"We finished in first place having such a strong opponent as Portugal in our group.

"We played well in all of the matches except the game in Northern Ireland (they lost 1-0 in August) where we performed unsatisfactorily.

"But in general I have positive memories from this campaign."

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan coach Berti Vogts was pleased his side had a strong finish to their World Cup qualifying campaign.

"I'd like to congratulate my team as we managed to equalise despite being a man down and playing against very strong opponents," the German said.

"It was very hard for us to play two matches at our top level in just four days but we managed to earn four points. I'm pleased with it."
