Moratti and Thohir hail Inter deal

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti and new majority shareholder Erick Thohir have welcomed the deal that sees the club come under the control of the Indonesian's International Sports Capital group.

Moratti's club has just had its worst season in more than a decade, three years after winning the Treble
Moratti hailed the 'enthusiasm and pragmatism' of the new majority shareholders.

Thohir, along with partners Rosan Roeslani and Handy Soetedjo, signed a deal to purchase 70% of the club on Tuesday, with Moratti, whose family have owned Inter for over 18 years, convinced he is leaving them "in good hands".

In a statement on the Inter website, the pair looked ahead to a bright future for the Nerazzurri.

“I think that the history of Inter is enriched thanks to our international partners, who I am sure will contribute to continued success,” Moratti said. “The enthusiasm and pragmatism of the new partners are certainly a guarantee for the future.”

Negotiations over the sale had been ongoing since the end of last season. The deal brings to an end a Moratti-led era in which Inter won five Serie A titles, a Champions League, a Coppa Italia and the Club World Cup.

His father Angelo’s period in charge before him had brought three Serie A titles, two European Cups and two Intercontinental Cups.

“I wish Erick, Rosan and Handy the very best of luck in adding more victories to our beloved colours, with the trust and friendship of our fantastic fans,” Moratti said.

“My family and I will continue to live this extraordinary adventure together with Erick, Rosan and Handy, with the same dedication and affection which bind us to Inter and Interisti”.

Thohir, whose portfolio also includes a part-share in DC United and US basketball club the Philadelphia 76ers, said he was excited by his latest acquisition.

“Today is a truly special day,” he added. “I am honoured that Massimo Moratti has vested in me the responsibility of leading Inter into a new chapter of their history, and I’m delighted by the fact that he will continue to be present as my partner.

“The work done by the Moratti family has made Inter one of the most respected clubs in the world for their value on the field and for their social duties.

“I'm a businessman, but first and foremost I’m a fan and a lover of sport. I cannot wait to put our passion and our international experience at the service of this fantastic club and their fans.”
