Udo Lattek diagnosed with Parkinson's

Coaching legend Udo Lattek has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, according to reports in the German media.

Udo Lattek enjoyed a highly successful return to Bayern
Udo Lattek enjoyed huge success throughput his coaching career.

• Greatest Managers: Udo Lattek

Lattek, 78,  is the most successful German club coach ever. He has won eight Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach, three German cups with Bayern Munich and all three major European competitions -- the European Cup with Bayern in 1974, the UEFA Cup with Monchengladbach in 1979 and the Cup Winners’ Cup with Barcelona in 1982.

He later returned to the Bundesliga, supervising Matthias Sammer’s first step as the Borussia Dortmund coach as part of his staff during the last few games in the 1999-2000 season and helping BVB avoid the drop into the second tier but later said that he “realised this is no longer my world”.

Lattek spent the last few years working as a media pundit but recently scaled back his public appearances, making his last one during the all-German Champions League final in May, of which he said at the time: “I embark on my last football journey.”

His wife Hildegard has now told German tabloid Bild that Lattek has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

“My husband has Parkinson’s disease,” she said. “If he has been in bed for a couple of days he needs the wheel chair.”

The legendary coach has been struggling with several serious health problems over the past couple of years. He twice needed to undergo brain surgery due to an innocuous brain tumour in 2001 and 2012. In 2010 he suffered a stroke.
