Marseille set Morgan Amalfitano fee

West Bromwich Albion head coach Steve Clarke will have to pay four million pounds to make the signing of Morgan Amalfitano permanent at the end of the season, a source has told ESPN.

Evans: Right time for break

Clarke is confident that Albion remain in the driving seat to complete a transfer for the midfielder -- currently on loan from Marseille -- despite interest from Italian clubs Juventus and Roma.

The terms of the 12-month loan deal for the 28-year-old, who has been a revelation so far this term, include an option for the Baggies to buy, with the Ligue 1 club demanding a fee of four million pounds.

Amalifitano will still have a year left on his Marseille contract when his loan at The Hawthorns finishes at the end of the season, but the French side are unwilling to allow the player to enter the final year of his deal.

Marseille are confident they will be able to demand such a large fee for the player, given his immediate impact in the Premier League and the attraction he is generating from Italy.

Clarke accepts that despite Albion having moved first to offer Amalfitano a career away from France, all will depend on whether the player chooses to remain at The Hawthorns.

Ludovic Fattizzo, Amalfitano's agent, has confirmed the interest from Roma and Juventus but conceded it is impossible for either club to sign the player in January.

"At the moment he is very happy where he is, the Premier League excites him. We will not see him transfer now, indeed I would say that there is zero chance for January, maybe in June," Fattizzo said.

Clarke has urged supporters who want to see Amalfitano's long-term future secured to have patience, and Fattizzo believes that it will not be until the New Year until negotiations over a permanent deal begin.

"We will discuss this issue again in February after the winter market," he said.

Roma, who are the current leaders of Serie A with seven straight wins, are managed by Frenchman Rudi Garcia -- the former Lille coach, who knows Amalfitano well from his time in French football.
