Steven Cherundolo to test knee

U.S. international and Hannover 96 legend Steven Cherundolo, 34, is set to make his comeback in a Hannover 96 test match against minor league side TSV Barsinghausen on Thursday.

Ongoing knee problems have limited Cherundolo to only five competitive games in all of 2013 with his most recent surgery coming this past August. The 34-year old is the longest serving player in Bundesliga, having joined then Bundesliga II club Hannover as a 19-year old from the University of Portland for €125.000.

He has since played in 368 league games in Hannover, with a club record 300 in Bundesliga. Cherundolo has also won 87 caps for the U.S. team and played in three World Cups.

Last month, Cherundolo called playing his fourth World Cup his "last big goal" in football and vowed to "fight until the last minute" to reach his goal. Cherundolo also said he was in close contact with U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann.

Ahead of his return to the football pitch in Baringhausen, where Cherundolo "hopes to play for one half," the Hannover captain told Bild that Klinsmann's Europa scout Matthias Hamann will be amongst those watching the right back making his first steps to Brazil 2014.

"I was on the phone with Matthias Hamann only yesterday. He will be at the game," Cherundolo said.

"I need playing time now. Every test, every training is a step forward," he added.

Cherundolo is hoping to return to Hannover’s Bundesliga squad in their home match against TSG Hoffenheim in late October and is also eyeing a quick return to the U.S. team for their November test against Scotland.

"That’s my goal," he said.
