German FA told: Be clear on Qatar

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has given his backing to FIFA in the latest of a series of controversies surrounding the organisation of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Former German Football Association (DFB) president Theo Zwanziger has urged the organisation to make its opinions clear in the ongoing debate over the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

On Friday, FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced that the executive committee of world football's governing body would set up a commission to examine the possibility of holding the tournament in the winter.

However, a decision on the matter will not be made until after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil has been completed.

Zwanziger told Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung that the DFB and its current president, Wolfang Niersbach, needed to make a stand in the debate.

"In important questions regarding sports politics, I would wish for the DFB to weigh in," he said.

"Everyone in a leading position has a different approach and does as he thinks fit, but you also have an overall policy responsibility which has to show.

"The DFB is the biggest national association worldwide and is taken very seriously within FIFA. Wolfgang Niersbach also knows that."

But Niersbach told kicker he had already made his opinions clear, and the football magazine said he had "repeatedly said he has no understanding for the allocation of the World Cup to Qatar".

"I have, time and time again, distinctly commented on the Qatar issue," the president said.

It comes as politicians in Germany voiced concern over widespread allegations of the mistreatment of migrant workers on World Cup-related projects in Qatar.

Gunter Krings, a member of chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats, told Suddeutsche Zeitung the situation needed to be improved otherwise "another host needs to be found".
