Routledge: Europa win proved credentials

Swansea midfielder Wayne Routledge believes Thursday's 1-0 Europa League win over St Gallen proved his side are capable of challenging for European honours.

Routledge netted the winner for Swansea.

Routledge scored the only goal of the match to move Swansea three points clear at the top of Group A, significantly boosting their chances of progressing to the knockout stages.

Although Swansea looked far from their best and were fortunate St Gallen striker Goran Karanovic missed a first-half penalty, positive results in the next two matches against Kuban Krasnodar could send them through.

Routledge has commended Swansea's "character" and insists they sent a message to their Europa League opponents.

"No game is going to be easy and they battled hard, and in the end it was a gritty win," he told ITV4. "[The performance] shows that we have massive character but in the dressing room we know that we can knuckle down and play if we have to, but people know what we are about now."

Leon Britton was pleased to grab another three points despite Swansea's lacklustre performance.

"The first 25 mins it was a bit sloppy and with the penalty -- maybe we could have had a penalty ourselves," he said. "It wasn't a great performance. It as pretty gritty but it's two from two."
