Diego Costa 'must wait for Spain call-up'

It's a choice most would envy. Whether to play for current world champions Spain or five-time World Cup winners Brazil.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced that Diego Costa has opted to play for Spain over Brazil -- but the Atletico Madrid forward cannot be named in Vicente del Bosque's next squad.

Costa would play for Spain

Costa, 24, was capped twice by Brazil in friendly games in March, but after being left out of the squad for the summer’s Confederations Cup campaign he took Spanish citizenship in July.

He is free to make the switch having not played a competitive game for his native country, and RFEF officials have now submitted the required paperwork to FIFA.

However, due to red-tape tissues, La Roja coach Del Bosque -- who has said he is open to calling up Costa -- will not be able to name him in his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Georgia.

A RFEF statement read: "Diego Costa wants to play for the Spanish national team, although bureaucracy inhibits this for the moment.

"Atletico Madrid player Diego Costa cannot be selected tomorrow [Friday] by manager Vicente del Bosque for the upcoming games against Belarus and Georgia as FIFA have demanded additional paperwork, which is already being undertaken, even though the player has verbally expressed to the Spanish coach his desire to play for his national team in the future."

FIFA has since written back to the RFEF demanding "complementary requisites'' before approving his registration.

Football's world governing body has also asked the Brazilian Football Confederation to provide a certificate confirming Costa has not played in an "official match'' for his country of birth.

Costa has been in a rich vein of form this season and has hit eight goals in seven La Liga games for Atletico.
