Spurs sink Anzhi, Lazio fight back

Jermain Defoe moved to within one goal of Martin Chivers' club record European haul of 22 after helping Tottenham to a comfortable 2-0 win in near-freezing conditions against Anzhi Makhachkala.

Group K always looked like it would be a cakewalk for Spurs, who came through their toughest test thanks to Defoe and Nacer Chadli strikes in the first half on the outskirts of Moscow.

Elsewhere in Group K, Tromso were denied a winning start under Steinar Nilsen as a late Ricardinho strike saw them held to a 1-1 home draw by 10-man FC Sheriff.

Second-half substitute Sergio Floccari scored two late goals to hand Lazio a valuable point in a 3-3 draw at Trabzonspor in  Group J. Goals from Yusuf Erdogan and Adrian Mierzejewski gave the hosts a 2-0 lead midway through the first half and after Ogenyi Onazi reduced the deficit for Lazio.

Trabzonspor struck again before half-time through Paulo Henrique but Floccari then came to the rescue with two goals for the visitors and the result leaves Lazio and Trabzonspor level on four points at the top of the pool.

Apollon Limassol claimed their first points in Group J with a 1-0 victory at Legia Warsaw, Gaston Sangoy redeeming himself with the winning goal after missing a penalty.

Lyon and Guimaraes shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Stade Gerland  to ensure both sides remain unbeaten in Group I. Moussa Maazou, who was later sent off, gave the Portuguese visitors a first-half lead but that was wiped out by Maxime Gonalons after the interval.

Rijeka had goalkeeper Ivan Vargic to thank for a string of fine saves as Real Betis were held to a 1-1 Group I draw in a largely one-sided contest at Stadion Kantrida.

The Croatians took the lead through a wonderful Leon Benko volley in the 10th minute but after Betis levelled through Mabwati Cedrick's rising drive four minutes later there was only going to be one winner, with the Spanish side dominating.

Rubin Kazan scored four goals in the final half-hour for their second win in Group D against Zulte-Waregem at the Central Stadium, triumphing 4-0. A goalless first half was followed by the Russian side running riot in the second half, with Israel international Bebras Natcho in inspired form, setting up two goals before finishing the rout with a glorious 25-yard free-kick.

That result allowed Wigan to go second in the group as they marked their first ever home match in Europe with a maiden victory, 3-1 over Slovenians Maribor. Owen Coyle's side should have been more than two ahead at half-time and there were a few nervy moments after the visitors pulled one back but a late goal from Nick Powell made it 3-1.

Sofiane Feghouli put the result beyond doubt with Valencia's second goal against Kuban Krasnodar.
Sofiane Feghouli was on the scoresheet for Valencia.

Goals by Paco Alcacer -- benefiting from a terrible error by Kuban goalkeeper Aleksandr Belenov -- and Sofiane Feghouli saw Miroslav Djukic's Valencia get back on track in Group A with a 2-0 victory away to Kuban Krasnodar.

Swansea followed up their opening victory over Los Che by going clear at the top of Group A with a scrappy 1-0 win over St Gallen at the Liberty Stadium.

Wayne Routledge got the only goal of the game six minutes into the second half, tapping in at the far post. Swansea were a long way short of the form they showed in humbling Valencia at the Mestalla, and the visitors would have taken something from the game had striker Goran Karanovic converted a first-half penalty.

Fiorentina overcame adverse weather to beat Dnipro 2-1 and move to the top of Group E. Gonzalo Rodriguez put the Italians ahead in the 53rd minute from the penalty spot before Dnipro's Yevhen Seleznyov converted a spot-kick to equalise three minutes later.

However, Massimo Ambrosini scored the winner in the 73rd minute to hand Fiorentina their second victory in the pool, although the visitors ended the game with 10 men after David Pizarro was sent off for a double booking four minutes from time. The group's other game saw Rui Miguel's strike secure a 1-1 draw for Pacos de Ferreira against Pandurii Targu-Jiu.

Christoper Trimmel headed a late but richly deserved equaliser for Rapid Vienna as they and Dynamo Kiev opened their points accounts in a 2-2 draw in Group G. That draw saw Genk take control of the group as they recorded their second successive win. Two second-half goals saw Thun sunk 2-1, Julien Gorius and Jelle Vossen striking either side of the hour mark.

Diego Perotti's penalty and a last-gasp strike from Carlos Bacca sealed a 2-0 victory for Sevilla against 10-man Freiburg.

The Spaniards, who have struggled in La Liga this campaign with just one win from their opening seven matches, went to the top of Group H after making it six points from an available six at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Elsewhere in the group, Slovan Liberec held on to claim their first group win over Estoril, triumphing 2-1, after both sides were reduced to 10 men.

Dimitris Salpingidis hit a stoppage-time leveller to deny AZ Alkmaar a second straight Europa League as PAOK salvaged a 1-1 draw.

Also in Group L, Alon Turgeman scored a spectacular goal to salvage a hard-earned point for Maccabi Haifa as the Israeli side came from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Shakhter Karagandy in Kazakhstan.

It seemed the Dutch hosts were set to make it a perfect six points after two rounds of games in Group L when defender Jeffrey Gouweleeuw netted the opening goal in the 81st minute. Yet in the fourth minute added on, Greek visitors PAOK secured a draw when Salpingidis tucked home.

Bordeaux's disappointing season continued as they let slip a lead to lose 2-1 at home to Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the Europa League. Francis Gillot's side have won only one of their first eight games in Ligue 1 to sit just one place above the relegation zone and this was their second successive European defeat to leave them bottom of Group F.

Eintracht Frankfurt lead the way in that group and were on easy street long before the final whistle as their Europa League campaign continued to run like a dream with a 3-0 victory over APOEL.

Two goals from Alan helped Salzburg clinch a 2-1 victory at Esbjerg as the Austrian Bundesliga leaders took a firm grasp on Group C. The Brazilian struck twice in the first half to put the visitors on course for their second win of the competition, with Pape Diouf's reply coming too late for Esbjerg.

Elfsborg and Standard Liege both got off the mark in Group C after playing out a 1-1 draw at the Boras Arena.

Bulgarian champions Ludogorets continued their impressive start to the Europa League with a comprehensive 3-0 win at home to Dinamo Zagreb, while PSV Eindhoven claimed their first Group B points with a 2-0 away win over Russian side Chornomorets.
