Shearer predicts tough season for Toon

Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer has warned the club’s fans to expect another season of inconsistency.

A bright start to the 2013-14 campaign saw the Magpies take seven points from their opening four fixtures. However, back-to-back 3-2 defeats to Hull City and Everton have meant the club have slipped to 16th in the Premier League table.

With Newcastle set to travel to Cardiff this weekend in the hope of securing a much-needed win, Shearer believes that keeping any momentum going will prove to be something of a problem for his former side this season.

“They could really do with a win on Saturday, particularly after the result they had the other day,” he told the Evening Chronicle. “The first-half performance was really poor at Everton, but I think that’s probably going to be the story of Newcastle this season.

“They will get really impressive results, such as at Aston Villa, and they will have desperately disappointing ones, like we had at Goodison Park the other night. In saying all that, I think they will still finish around about the mid-table mark.”

However, despite the mixed results, Shearer has still been impressed by some of what he has seen this season -- reserving special praise for two of Newcastle’s French stars.

“[Loic] Remy has started really well. He looks positive and is scoring goals, which is good,” he said. “For me, he looks as if he is enjoying his time in a Newcastle shirt. That’s nice to see. If he can stay fit, he will score a lot of goals.

“[Yohan] Cabaye is a good player. I don’t think there is any doubt about that. He showed that at Everton He’s a top midfielder and I would like to see him have an extended run in the team because he gives the midfield good balance. He’s a talent, that’s for sure.”
