'Edinson Cavani could be central striker'

Paris Saint-Germain boss Laurent Blanc has hinted that he could soon change his system to allow Edinson Cavani to partner Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack.

Edinson Cavani has not been playing in his favoured central striking role since arriving at PSG.

So far this season Blanc has favoured a 4-3-3 formation, which has seen summer signing Cavani, 26, operating on the right side of the front three.

Ahead of PSG’s Champions League clash with Benfica on Wednesday, Blanc told reporters that he could eventually alter his tactics to better suit the Uruguayan attacker.

“With the same players, we could play with three midfielders, two strikers and a No. 10,” he said. “We could have a different structure so that everyone feels good in the team. We’re thinking about it and we’re working on it.”

However Blanc is highly unlikely to change his system for the meeting with Benfica, who visit the Parc des Princes having also won their opening Group C match in the Champions League.

“For the moment, Edinson is playing on the right side that he knows well,” Blanc said. “He’s playing well and is scoring goals.”

Cavani scored in the recent wins over Valenciennes and Toulouse in Ligue 1, which has helped take some of the pressure off Ibrahimovic. The Sweden striker netted 30 goals in Ligue 1 last season but this time around he has created more goals than he has scored.

“I see that as something positive,” said Ibrahimovic, who is captain of PSG in the absence of injured centre back Thiago Silva. “There’s not only one goalscorer -- other players like Cavani can score. The team is stronger.

"I’ve missed a lot of chances this year but goals aren’t the problem. We need to become a machine, getting the best qualities out of everyone. The important thing is that the team wins. If we win and I score less, that’s a lot better than if I score a lot of goals and we lose.”

PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi is a doubt for the game against Benfica after hurting his foot in the last training session before the match. Blanc will, however, be boosted by the return of Brazilian defender Alex, who is expected to replace Zoumana Camara at the heart of the French champions’ defence.
