Jonathan Orozco: El Tri fine as is

He is nursing a sore left shoulder and has tough competition for the starter’s role, so it’s easy to understand why Monterrey goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco has tired of El Tri’s pursuit of Real Sociedad’s Carlos Vela.

"If he doesn’t want to come, then he shouldn’t come, what is the problem?" Orozco told reporters after Mexico national team camp practice Monday night. "We have to stop talking about this. The quality of those who are here, there you have it.

"That’s what I think, and I have heard others talk as though he were (Lionel) Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo or someone who was going to make us win. But this is a team and the team is here and the group that has been put together is very good and we are all pulling for the same goal, which is Mexico’s qualifying."

El Tri coach Victor Manuel Vucetich, who is working with Mexico’s domestic players in Mexico City this week, on Monday declared the Vela matter "a closed case," and did not include the striker in his recall. He appealed to his team’s "sports memory" to focus on the upcoming qualifiers.

"These are players who must recapture that sports memory. They have been champions with extraordinary seasons, they are experienced, quality players and they know perfectly well what they are capable of," Vucetich said. "We are not worrying about us, we are working for ourselves and we are going to do what we have to do."

Mexico sits fifth in the CONCACAF 2014 World Cup qualifying Hexagonal standings. El Tri hosts Panama on Oct. 11 before closing four days later in Costa Rica. Vucetich is Mexico’s third coach in three Hex matches against Panama.

After the team's 2-1 Hex home loss to Honduras on Sept. 6, the team fired Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre. Luis Fernando Tena, one of de la Torre's top assistants, took the post on an interim basis, but in his first game at the helm, Mexico suffered a 2-0 loss to the United States on Sept. 10, leaving Mexico on the brink of not qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1990.

Mexico hired Vucetich two days later.

Vela, a 24-year-old striker, has not played for the national team since March 29, 2011, for a friendly against Venezuela and reportedly turned down a call-up from de la Torre in August.

Vucetich said the injured Orozco was evaluated by a specialist, was cleared by Monterrey and would be cleared to play for El Tri.

Meanwhile, Hector Moreno likely won't play in Espanyol’s match versus Elche due to a leg injury. Villarreal's Giovani dos Santos does not expect to be sidelined Friday versus Granada even though he sustained a finger fracture over the weekend.
