Matthias Sammer blast upsets Lahm

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm has added his thoughts to Matthias Sammer’s controversial statements on the Bayern team attitude -- made over a fortnight ago.

Philipp Lahm is hoping to make it third time lucky in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund
Philipp Lahm is a senior member of the Bayern Munich team.

• Schaaf: Bayern's party atmosphere preserved

Following Bayern’s 2-0 win over Hannover in mid-September, Sammer had urged the Bayern team to “get out of their comfort zone” and hit out at the players for “playing football without any emotion”.

In the week that followed the statement, Bayern president Uli Hoeness and CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge both voiced their displeasure while coach Pep Guardiola added that he needs to adjust to the German way of discussing problems in public.

Since Sammer’s statements Bayern recorded four straight wins in all competitions and closed the two-point gap on Bundesliga leaders Dortmund, who now only top the league on goal difference.

Ahead of Bayern’s Champions League game at the Etihad, German weekly Die Zeit released quotes from a Philipp Lahm interview, which will be published on Wednesday.

Lahm is quoted as saying that if an official feels the need to criticise the team "he should do it behind closed doors".

He continued: "It takes a while before you develop a feeling for when the right time comes for this kind of thing, and what tone you should take.

"When criticising you have to be able to withhold your emotions. If the boss is too emotional he will, at some point, lose. Then he is no longer too trustworthy."

In a brief statement for German news wire SID before boarding the plane to Manchester, Sammer said of Lahm’s comments: "Everything’s fine, [there is] no problem at all."
