Roma perfect, Juventus rule Turin

Gervinho scored twice as Roma stormed back to the top of the Serie A table with a thumping 5-0 victory over Bologna at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Giallorossi had already made history by starting their campaign with five straight wins but more pressing was the need to keep Juventus and Napoli underneath them after last season's top-two sides both won their weekend fixtures.

Winless Bologna were never likely to present a serious obstacle to Rudi Garcia's men and Roma sensed their fear, plundering a three-goal first-half lead through Alessandro Florenzi, Gervinho and Mehdi Benatia. The eight million euro signing from Arsenal then fired his third goal in Giallorossi colours before birthday boy Adem Ljajic added gloss to the victory five minutes from time.

Juventus continued their strong start to the season as Paul Pogba's solitary strike secured a 1-0 victory over city rivals Torino.

The Bianconeri came into the weekend unbeaten and kept up the pressure at the top of the table thanks to Pogba's second-half header. Torino, without a win over Juve since 1995, never looked in danger of breaking that unwanted record and produced few chances of merit over the 90 minutes.

Inter Milan failed to keep the pressure up at the top after Radja Nainggolan's late free-kick rescued a point from a 1-1 draw for Cagliari.

Walter Mazzarri's men could have been out of sight by half-time and victory would have taken them level with Napoli and Juve on 16 points, but Rossoblu goalkeeper Michael Agazzi had a resilient afternoon at the Stadio Nereo Rocco.

Substitute Mauro Icardi finally found a way through for Inter with 15 minutes remaining but Nainggolan stepped up to grab Cagliari a share of the points in the final phases.

Plucky Sassuolo recovered from two goals down to force a 2-2 draw with Lazio and pick up a first home point of the Serie A season.

The early days of top-flight competition had not been kind to the Serie B champions and four opening games saw 15 goals sail into the Sassuolo net for only one scored.

But a hard-earned midweek draw at Napoli steeled their resolve and, despite a brief wobble that allowed Andre Dias and Antonio Candreva in for a quickfire double, the northerners promptly hit back through Ezequiel Schelotto and Antonio Floro Flores to rescue a point.

German Denis scored twice as Atalanta claimed a 2-0 win at home over his former club Udinese.

Denis opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time and the Argentinian striker doubled his account for the match in the 63rd minute to secure Atalanta's second victory of the season.

Catania deservedly secured their first league win of the season by beating Chievo 2-0 at the Stadio Angelo Massimino.

Goals from Jaroslav Plasil and Lucas Castro in either half were enough for a win that might have been even more comfortable following a dominant home display. Catania had sat at the foot of the table alongside newly-promoted Sassuolo before kick-off with just a single point.

Jorginho settled a frantic battle between two promoted sides at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi as his late penalty earned Hellas Verona a 2-1 win over Livorno.

The Serie B runners-up were indebted to goalkeeper Rafael for keeping Livorno at bay in the first half but they almost reached the break a goal up after on-loan Porto forward Juan Iturbe scored his first goal for the club.

Lorenzo Ariaudo levelled with a header before half-time, only for Jorginho to settle the match from 11 metres after Luca Toni had been brought down in the box in the last 20 minutes.
