Poyet: I can talk Sunderland's language

Gustavo Poyet believes his multi-lingual skills could enhance his chances of being appointed as the new Sunderland manager.

Gus Poyet would relish a Premier League chance.
Poyet believes his talent for languages could help Sunderland.

Randall: Life after Di Canio

The Uruguayan's comments were reported shortly after a source close to him told ESPN that the Premier League's bottom club had "all but" decided he would be their next manager.

Former Brighton boss Poyet has made little secret of his desire to succeed the sacked Paolo Di Canio at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats brought in 14 different players from a variety of countries over the summer, and Poyet told South American radio station Sport 890: "It's a new team, very international, and it would be convenient for the new person to speak various languages. You wouldn't need to have translators continually.

"That is something that helps me, because I have that ability. But there are things that go against me, for example the fact that I've never managed in the Premier League."

Poyet said he had also spoken to Roberto Di Matteo -- another manager to have been linked with the Sunderland job -- whose agent has ruled him out of the running.

He said: "I called him and said: 'Really, are you interested?' and he said: 'No.' I said: 'Good, thank you. One less!'"

Meanwhile, Stadium of Light caretaker boss Kevin Ball, who has voiced an interest in the full-time job,  has praised Lee Cattermole after reinstating him to the first team for the 2-0 Capital One Cup win over Peterborough on Tuesday.

Cattermole had been ostracised by Di Canio but played his part in securing a morale-boosting win, and Ball said: "When I saw him on the pitch on Tuesday, bearing in mind he had not played 90 minutes for a long time, I think he produced a very accomplished performance. He drove the team on."
