Stoke loan Jack Butland to Barnsley

Mark Hughes has allowed Jack Butland to move to Championship strugglers Barnsley on an emergency loan.

Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland is gaining experience on loan at Barnsley, but is tipped for a bright future.

• Whittaker: Plenty of positives

England international Butland has been granted his wish for first-team football -- following his £3.5 million move from Birmingham City in January.

Butland had a string of Championship clubs and several European sides keen to take him on loan, but Hughes has decided on sending the 20-year-old to Oakwell to help out David Flitcroft's struggling team.

He will spend 93 days with the Championship side, who are currently bottom of the table after a difficult start to the season.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones had been trying to loan Butland for several weeks, to provide competition for existing first-choice 'keeper Chris Kirkland.

Real Sociedad and Sporting Lisbon both made enquiries about the availability of Butland, but it is understood that the 'keeper preferred to remain in England.

He is yet to make a first-team appearance for Stoke and spent the second half of last season on loan at Birmingham City.

Hughes has Thomas Sorensen as back-up to first-choice goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and has been looking for the ideal loan deal to get Butland regular first-team football.

The manager waited until the transfer window closed before making any decision on Butland, because of the wealth of interest from a host of top clubs, including Manchester United and Manchester City in Begovic.

It is believed that Barnsley have given guarantees that Butland will play regularly during his loan spell as Flitcroft looks to guide his team away from the relegation zone.

Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes said: "Jack is an outstanding young talent but when we signed him it was on the understanding that he needed to continue his development by playing first team football on a regular basis.

"We're pleased that such a good opportunity for Jack to go out on loan has presented itself and we are sure it will be beneficial to both Jack and the club."
