Marco van Ginkel blow for Blues

Chelsea have announced that Marco van Ginkel has undergone anterior cruciate ligament surgery and is expected to be sidelined for around six months.

Worrall: Neglected ones star

Van Ginkel lasted only ten minutes of Chelsea’s 2-0 Capital One Cup victory over Swindon Town before sustaining the injury and afterwards assistant first-team coach Steve Holland said: “It doesn’t look good.”

His agent, Rob Jansen, told the Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau on Wednesday that, following an MRI scan, the 20-year-old was set to undergo surgery and was unlikely to feature again in the current campaign.

But Chelsea have offered a more optimistic view that the midfielder could return before the end of the season, as he is to be out for "for approximately six months".

Van Ginkel, who signed for Chelsea this summer from Vitesse Arnhem, has been capped twice for Netherlands and now looks unlikely to feature at next summer's World Cup.
