Ball eyes permanent Sunderland job

Sunderland caretaker manager Kevin Ball is hopeful of being considered for the role on a permanent basis.

Kevin Ball wants the Sunderland job on a permanent basis.
Kevin Ball is in his second caretaker spell at Sunderland having previously managed the club in 2006.

- Randall: The price of failure

Asked to take temporary charge of the Wearsiders in the wake of Paolo Di Canio’s departure, Ball began his tenure with a comfortable 2-0 victory over League One Peterborough in the Capital One Cup.

Speaking after the game, Ball said he would like to be considered for the full-time position following an apprenticeship with the club’s development squad.

“Anybody who is anybody would like to be considered for it,” Ball said. “In the sense of what I have done as a coach or a player and not only that, my qualifications I have gone out and got as a coach, I would like to be considered.

“But ultimately, that's the club's decision and I would go with that, whether it was me or someone else, they would have my full support.”

Former Brighton manager Gustavo Poyet is the current bookies’ favourite for the job and the Uruguayan has made no secret of his desire to take control at the Stadium of Light.

However owner Ellis Short is keen to take his time in making the appointment, which will see the club’s third manager in the space of six months.

Still currently bottom of the Premier League table, attentions quickly turned to the weekend and the visit of Liverpool, a game which Ball confirmed he will remain in charge for.

“I will be in charge for the remainder of the week,” Ball said. “I’ve been told that I’ll be in charge on Sunday and then the situation will be reviewed but if something happens before the weekend then so be it.”
