Wenger: Bendtner can be 'unstoppable'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Nicklas Bendtner has the ability to be ‘unstoppable’, but admitted the striker needs to win over the Gunners faithful as he prepares to play his first game for the club in two years.

Bendtner looks set to play his part in Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup tie at West Bromwich Albion, with Wenger doing his best to fuel the striker with confidence as he awaits his Gunners comeback.

“It’s just down to attitude and fighting [spirit] and when he has that, Nicklas can be an unstoppable striker,” Wenger told the Arsenal website. “He gets his chance. Our job is about that, take your chance.

“Fans forgive you everything as long as you produce the performances on the football pitch. That’s what people want. I think our fans have a positive attitude towards Bendtner and they will be behind him. Only you can create that with your performances.”

“We needed him here and now he can convince everybody. We are open-minded, we believe in his qualities. He can use his body [with his] back to goal. He’s an intelligent player, he can play intelligent passes and protect. He’s a similar type size-wise to Olivier Giroud. The central role is perfect for him.”

Wenger went on to suggest his decision to make just one big money signing during the summer transfer window has been justified by his team’s solid start to the season, with continuity a key to the squad’s consistency following the opening day defeat to Aston Villa.

“Stability is important, as is mental togetherness, desire to win, motivational level and hunger and, of course on top of that, quality,” he added.

“Where the stability was important I think is with our first shock against Aston Villa. The fact that we could say 'look guys, we have been together for a while, we know that we have bounced back before, let's do that again'. That is where the stability is important.

“Overall if you consider the long-term run we are on since March you can say that this group has been remarkably consistent. That shows some special quality in my opinion.”
