Ronaldo: Casillas must fight

Former Real Madrid striker Ronaldo admits Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas is unaccustomed to competition for his place but has urged his former team-mate to rise above the challenge of current number one Diego Lopez and establish himself at the Bernabeu once more.

Iker Casillas was left on the Real Madrid bench against Bilbao.
Casillas is hoping to break back into the first team.

Although Casillas had hoped for a change in fortunes after Carlo Ancelotti replaced Jose Mourinho in the summer, early signs have suggested the Los Blancos captain still faces a struggle to reclaim his starting spot.

Ronaldo, who made more than 100 appearances for Real from 2002-2007, believes Lopez is the best goalkeeper Casillas has had to compete with and expects Ancelotti to simply pick whoever is in the best form.

"Casillas is in a delicate situation," Ronaldo said. "He has not faced great competition like this before, but he is one of the best goalkeepers in history and so he has to earn his place.

"I also had Diego Lopez training alongside me [at Madrid] and he is very good. For Ancelotti, there is no trouble in picking between them."

Ronaldo also commented on Gareth Bale's world record transfer to Madrid, insisting there is no problem with the significant price tag if the Welshman lives up to his billing.

"There is much hope around him, I will follow him and I hope he has a very good season," he added. "Talking about money is easy, but how much money is paid does not matter more than the quality of the player. One is worth what they deserve to be, what matters is what he does to enforce it."
