Hamburg hire Bert Van Marwijk

Former Netherlands boss Bert van Marwijk has been appointed by Bundesliga strugglers Hamburg.

Bert van Marwijk guided Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup final.

Van Marwijk, 61, has penned an initial two-season deal with the club and will be tasked with transforming Hamburg’s fortunes after a poor start to the new campaign.

Die Rothosen have taken four points from their opening six games and are currently third-bottom of the table.

The recent 6-2 humiliation at the hands of Borussia Dortmund saw the end of Thorsten Fink’s reign and Van Marwijk, who guided Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup final, may well have stepped into a relegation battle.

Van Marwijk has been out of work since leaving his post with the Dutch national team after last summer’s European Championship and takes up his second position in the Bundesliga having previously managed Borussia Dortmund between 2004 and 2006.

Hamburg director of sport Oliver Kreuzer told the club's official website: "We're delighted that we have been able to appoint Bert van Marwijk as coach of HSV. He has a great deal of experience and has proven his ability many times.''

Van Marwijk will not be on the bench for Hamburg's DFB-Pokal game against Greuther Furth on Tuesday night, but will be officially presented at a press conference on Wednesday, when he will also lead his first training session at his new club.
