Roberto Martinez backs Everton badge

Roberto Martinez insists that Everton’s new badge must have a more traditional look -- and that it was right to bring the club motto ‘Nil Satis Nisi Optimum’ back into the design.

Roberto Martinez has kept faith the the team that drew at Norwich.
Roberto Martinez is backing Everton's plans to redesign their badge.

The motto, which is Latin for ‘nothing but the best is good enough’, was dropped as part of a controversial redesign unveiled in May.

More than 20,000 fans signed an online petition protesting against the new look, which also omitted the two laurel wreaths -- intended to signify the Olympian ideal of success -- that had been a part of the original 1938 crest drawn up by club secretary Theo Kelly.

Chief executive Robert Elstone apologised at the time for the new design, admitting that not enough fans had been consulted, and pledged that it would be redrawn for the 2014-15 season.

After an extensive consultation, Everton have unveiled three designs for next season’s badge, inviting fans to vote via their website. The winner will be confirmed on October 3.

Of the three designs, Martinez has chosen the one that most closely resembles their traditional badge, with the two wreaths included and the club motto at the bottom.

He said: "It’s really important that the badge reflects the passion and the history of the club. We’ve been listening to all the fans.

"The Nail Satis logo is important. It’s very, very important. We’re well aware that the fans weren’t happy with the change of the badge at the beginning of the season.

"I’m very pleased that, as a football club, we wanted to listen to our fans and see what they had to say.

"There’s been a lot of hard work behind the scenes, believe me. But now, we’re in a position where the fans’ voice has been heard, and we’ll make the right choice and we’ll all have a crest that we’re proud of.

"I like the uniqueness of our motto. Having ‘Nil Satis’ on the badge is important."

Martinez is likely to make several changes to his team as they head to Fulham in the Capital One Cup third round on Wednesday night.

Midfielder Darron Gibson is in the frame to make his first appearance of the season after recovering from a knee injury.

Romelu Lukaku is available for consideration after suffering a bang to the head in scoring the winner on his debut in a 3-2 Premier League victory at West Ham on Saturday.

Fellow forward Arouna Kone is just about over a knee problem, but Martinez will take a late check on his fitness.

Steven Pienaar is not yet ready to return from hamstring trouble, while fellow midfielder Leon Osman is awaiting the results of a scan on a groin problem that forced him off at Upton Park.

Martinez said: "Leon is a little bit of a concern. I don’t expect him to be fully fit for the game tomorrow. He’s going to have a scan today and I expect him to be out of the squad for Tuesday."

Centre-back Antolin Alcaraz, meanwhile, is recovering from a hernia, and has still to make his debut for the club since arriving in the summer after his contract at Wigan expired.

The manager added: "Every game that you play in an official manner is an important game. What’s important as well is that we understand that we need to share the demands between the squad.

"I do feel that this squad is ready to cope with that. Whichever team is on the pitch, I expect a real good performance and overall I expect a really difficult game against Fulham."
