City rampant in demolition derby

Manchester City delivered a dominant performance in the derby as they ran riot against rivals Manchester United, while Tottenham left it late to see off the challenge of Cardiff and Arsenal eased to victory against Stoke to move to the top of the Premier League.

Sergio Aguero struck his second and City's third goal against United.

City completed their biggest home victory in a Manchester derby since 2004 with a 4-1 demolition of United at the Etihad Stadium.

Controlling the game from the off, the home side took just 16 minutes to open the scoring as Sergio Aguero finished expertly, following Aleksandar Kolarov's delivery, before Yaya Toure grabbed another from a City corner on the stroke of half-time.

Manuel Pellegrini's side started the second half in equally dominant fashion as Aguero got on the end of an Alvaro Negredo cross for his second, before Samir Nasri volleyed home at the far post to make it four just minutes later.

United failed to recover but Wayne Rooney scored a late consolation with an expert free-kick to become the highest-scoring player in the history of the fixture.

Paulinho netted his first Premier League goal in stoppage time to give Tottenham a 1-0 victory and finally end the resistance of Cardiff 'keeper David Marshall.

Spurs dominated large sections of the game at Cardiff City Stadium but were denied on countless occasions as the Scot made crucial saves from Roberto Soldado, Christian Eriksen, Paulinho and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Even when former Swansea man Sigurdsson did beat Marshall, his effort struck the crossbar, but Paulinho finally made their superiority tell as he tapped in Erik Lamela's pass from close range to seal the win.

Arsenal's record signing Mesut Ozil continued to repay his £43 million transfer fee with a creative role as the Gunners moved to the top of the Premier League after a 3-1 win over Stoke at the Emirates Stadium.

Ozil, signed from Real Madrid on deadline day, had a hand in three of Arsenal's goals as Arsene Wenger's men finally ended the resistance of Mark Hughes' well-organised team.

Aaron Ramsey smashed in his seventh goal of an impressive season so far after Ozil's fifth-minute free-kick was parried by Asmir Begovic, but Geoff Cameron swept in a deserved equaliser for the visitors.

Ozil's class, though, proved the difference once more as his corner was flicked home by compatriot Per Mertesacker to give Arsenal the lead again before half-time and another pin-point deadball delivery made sure of all three points when Bacary Sagna looped in a header on 72 minutes.

Elsewhere, Swansea showed no signs of a Europa League hangover in South London as they outplayed Crystal Palace to triumph 2-0.

Fresh from demolishing Valencia at the Mestalla, Michael Laudrup urged his players to re-focus on their return to domestic action at Selhurst Park.

They did just that, and in some style, outclassing the Eagles from the outset, with goals from Michu and Nathan Dyer making sure of the points.
