Kinnear defends summer dealings

Joe Kinnear has looked to defend his role he played in Newcastle’s summer transfer dealings.

• Ryder: Newcastle crash to Hull

Appointed as the club’s director of football, Kinnear was unable to secure a single permanent signing during his first summer transfer window - Loic Remy the only new addition to Alan Pardew’s side after joining on loan from Queens Park Rangers.

Regardless, Kinnear has come in for heavy criticism from supporters since undertaking his new role and writing in his programme notes, insisted he was working on a number of potential deals over the course of the summer.

"It was very frustrating that we did not add at least another signing to the squad in the recent window, but it was not for lack of effort,” he wrote. “It was not an easy task to improve the quality of the current squad with the financial resources at our disposal, particularly in a window in which the value of players was grossly over-inflated and the demands of agents likewise.

"I worked very hard on several targets and we made a number of bids for players, but for various reasons - some of which were outside the club's control - we were unable to secure our targets. We will continue to operate in a financially responsible manner, buying only the right players for the right prices and not paying over the odds or making costly knee-jerk decisions.

"This is the reality of a well-run football club that lives within its means. When the deal is right and the player can add real quality and depth to the squad, we have the ability to spend.''

With Newcastle beginning the season brightly, Kinnear also believes that the current crop at the Magpies’ disposal are more than able to secure a top half finish. That comes despite the club toiling against relegation last season, something Kinnear believes was in part due to the club’s Europa League commitments.

“Everyone at the club is aware that last season was difficult and our final league position was not acceptable,” Kinnear said. “Clearly the injuries to key players and the sheer number of fixtures brought about by the Europa League were significant contributory factors.

“However without the impact of the Europa League, with our squad having had a full pre-season together, having retained key players over the summer and brought in Loic Remy to boost our attacking options, everyone at the club is feeling very positive about the campaign ahead with a top ten finish a realistic and achievable target.”
