Wenger happy with striking options

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claims he is content with the striking options at his disposal and has again suggested he is willing to bring Nicklas Bendtner back in from the cold to play a role this season.

Gonzalo Higuain, Luis Suarez and Demba Ba were all believed to be summer targets for Wenger as he looked to add firepower to a line-up that appears to have just one lead striker in Frenchman Olivier Giroud, yet the Frenchman now believes he does not need any additional forwards to launch a push for the Premier League title.

Wenger has high hopes that new signing Yaya Sanogo will develop into a star under his watch and, with Bendtner remaining at the club despite expectations that he would leave, the Gunners chief is satisfied with his striking trio.

“We have now strikers who are real strikers,” stated Wenger. “Sanogo is not fit but he has stature as well, we are building him up physically, he has good technical quality and don’t forget we have Bendtner who is coming back.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for Bendtner. Honestly, he was supposed to go, but he stayed and once he stays you have to consider him as a full player of the squad.

“He lost his way a little bit, but he is not a bad boy. He is a good guy. He took the easy way a little bit, but now he realises this can be his moment. He has got the message.”

Critics have suggested that Wenger is relying too heavily on Giroud to remain fit and in-form over an extended period, yet the Arsenal boss believes his leadings scorer still has more facets to add to his game.

“I think there is still a lot to come from Giroud and I am convinced that this is a very important season for him,” he added.

“He is a positive guy, he has a positive charisma. He has a good physical basic stamina, and guys who have a good stamina recover, and can repeat again. Let’s analyse at the end of the season before judging how good he is.”
