Mariners beat Indonesian champions 2-0

Central Coast Mariners have won their opening match of an eight-team invitational competition in Sumatra as part of the final preparations for defence of their A-League title.

The 2-0 victory over Indonesian Super League champions Sriwijaya FC came through a header from Matthew Simons in the 36th minute and Nick Fitzgerald's 80th minute strike.

Coach Graham Arnold was delighted with the work of his players in a competitive game on Friday.

"If there was one disappointing thing it was the lack of killer instinct in front of goal but we made the chances, and the hardest thing is to make chances," Arnold said.

"Once you start making them eventually the goals will come.

"We've had a good six or seven weeks of hard work on the training pitch, our structures are coming together, our work is coming together, and Marcos (Flores) is starting to see the pictures and see the movement off the ball that we want, so I am very happy with that."

Arnold offered special praise to recruit Storm Roux who dominated his marker down the right.

"I thought he was excellent at right back and is starting to get what we want and that's exactly the same as what Josh Rose gives you on the other side. And I thought Marcel Seip showed today that he's a real good acquisition."

Their second match on Sunday is against Malaysia's U23 team.
