Di Canio says Sessegnon 'didn't care'

Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio has accused Stephane Sessegnon of "not caring" during his final few weeks on Wearside.

Stephane Sessegnon has hit five goals for Sunderland this term
Sessegnon takes on his old club this weekend.

Fans’ favourite Sessegnon, 29, is set to face his former employers when Sunderland travel to the Hawthorns to face West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.

The forward joined the Baggies on deadline day despite Di Canio having initially insisted that he did not wish to sell him.

But the manager indicated that Sessegnon's performances at the start of the season had not been what he expected, telling The Journal: "To be honest, once we spoke and I said: 'I want to keep you,' then I had a player whose performances were not as good.

"He had a very good pre-season, and in the first two games you can play badly, but the body language was not of a player who wants to give his best.

"And then we had a crucial match. It was the cup and everybody was at the stadium. After quarter of an hour, at the same time we conceded a goal, my player was out somewhere and was found [he was arrested and charged with drink-driving during the Capital One Cup tie against MK Dons].

"It means you don’t care about the club, so your time is gone. It was the opportunity to say for everybody, and especially for him, OK, time to go.

"For this reason, he left, not because he is a bad guy, but in my opinion his time was finished at Sunderland because he was not capable any more of giving his best."

Meanwhile, Sunderland have been dealt a blow with the news that Wes Brown has suffered a setback in his recovery from a calf problem.

Di Canio told the Echo: "I wanted to send him on the field [as a substitute during the defeat at home to Arsenal], but he wasn't ready.

"I asked Wes how he felt, but, to be honest, he wasn't completely confident. Now we've given him a few more days' rest to be sure he can get over this problem."
