Pellegrini ready to renew Moyes rivalry

Manuel Pellegrini says he takes heart from his fine record against David Moyes as he prepares to face the Scot in his Manchester derby debut on Sunday.

Silva set to return for derby

Pellegrini took on new Manchester United manager Moyes in a Champions League qualifier in 2005 when he was in charge of Villarreal and the 50-year-old was at Everton.

The Spanish side won both legs 2-1 and the now-Manchester City boss hopes that will stand him in good stead when the pair meet again at the Etihad Stadium.

“I know he had good results against Manchester City when he managed Everton,” Pellegrini said. “I had a very good record against Everton when he was [their] manager.

“I think it was the first time Everton would have played in the Champions League. For Villarreal it was the first time, it was a very difficult game at Goodison [Park] and we finished [by] beating Everton at home. It was a very, very special match for Villarreal and for me.”

Moyes has taken over from Sir Alex Ferguson, who won 13 league titles in his 26-and-a-half-year reign at Old Trafford, and his opposite number added: “It is impossible not to be under a lot of pressure, not [because he is] replacing Alex Ferguson but managing Manchester United or a big team you are always under important pressure. That is a good way to work because you know what you have to do.”

Pellegrini, who is eagerly anticipating his first derby, added: “I don’t need to be here to know how important it is, but working here and living here I know it is a special game.”
