Stephane Sessegnon gains work permit

West Bromwich Albion head coach Steve Clarke is ready to unleash Stephane Sessegnon against his former side Sunderland this weekend after he was finally granted a work permit.

Evans: Old hands key

Sessegnon, 29, who signed for the Baggies on deadline day, will be given an immediate opportunity to answer the criticisms of old boss Paolo Di Canio after the Italian questioned the forward’s commitment during his time at the Stadium of Light.

Clarke has stopped short of becoming involved in any exchange with Di Canio, but believes the Benin international will be ready to answer his critics as Albion look for their first win of the new Premier League campaign.

"I have not read what has been said. I am not really sure what context they were made in. Sometimes when a player leaves a club the manager chooses to say something and make some comments. That is up to the individual,” he said.

"I would think it would be a perfect game for him. He is in contention to be in the starting line-up along with 20 other players. I won't have to motivate him for the game. He has just joined a new club and he has a new challenge ahead of him.

"He is excited about the prospect of playing for the club and he is looking forward to the game. He can't wait to get started and I don't think it would matter what team he was playing against."

Clarke has only had a few days to work with Sessegnon since he arrived at the end of the transfer window, but does not feel he will unsettle the group.

"I have only known him ten days. I have not had very long to get to know him and we have not had too many chats," Clarke said. "He is quiet and does not say much. I was quiet when I was young, but that does not make you introverted and a difficult character."
