Thiago Motta: PSG never had any doubt

Thiago Motta says that Paris Saint-Germain will be hard to stop if they manage to build on their 4-1 Champions League victory at Olympiakos.

Johnson: PSG win big
Blanc expects big things

Motta, 31, scored a rare double as PSG opened their European campaign with an impressive showing in Greece ahead of Sunday’s Ligue 1 meeting with Monaco. However, the midfielder said the result was not required to send a message to their fellow big spenders.

“It’s a message for nobody -- only for us -- and it signifies that, if we play with intelligence, we’ll be a very big team,” he said.

He insisted the win would have no bearing on the meeting with the league leaders at the Parc des Princes, adding: “It doesn’t reassure us because we weren’t worried. It doesn’t give us any more confidence because we don’t doubt ourselves.”

Motta scored two headed goals late in the game to see off the Greek side but he said it was tough going in Piraeus.

“It’s my first double in the Champions League but what counts is the result,” he said. “What we did in the second half was very interesting. We knew how to recover the ball further up the pitch and, especially, a lot quicker.

“This second half, added to what we did in Bordeaux, makes me think that we’re on the right track. We missed a lot of things in the first half but what matters is the manner in which we knew how to pick things up.”

PSG coach Laurent Blanc was also pleased with the victory, which was secured in the second half after Vladimir Weiss had cancelled out Edinson Cavani’s opening goal.

“It’s never easy to start away from home and, whatever people say about it, it’s not easy against Olympiakos, so the result is satisfying,” he said. “We came to impose our game and the score is really satisfying.

“I was never really worried. Olympiakos caused us a lot of problems but a lot teams will have problems here if they play like that in the first half.

“We thought we’d done the hardest part by scoring the first goal but logically they came back. But with the game that we practise, we could make the difference easier afterwards because our opponents got tired.”
