AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri has revealed much of the team he will be sending into action in the Champions League against Celtic on Wednesday night but, with only 13 players available, there were few surprises.
The latest injuries to Kaka, Stephan El Shaarawy and Riccardo Montolivo have reduced Allegri’s options significantly, leaving him with only 13 fit players, which could become 12 come Wednesday night when he has to hand in his team sheet for the Rossoneri’s opening group stage fixture.
“At the moment, we have 13 players, with a question mark over [Andrea] Poli,” Allegri said at a pre-match press conference. “My only two doubts are in defence between [Kevin] Constant and [Urby] Emanuelson, and one between [Valter] Birsa and Robinho, and I’ll decide by the morning.
“[Cristian] Zaccardo, [Philippe] Mexes, [Cristian] Zapata will play, then [Antonio] Nocerino, [Nigel] De Jong and [Sulley] Muntari with [Alessandro] Matri and [Mario] Balotelli in attack. The list of the injured seems like a casualty report in war, but I’m not worried about the situation.”
Allegri could have done with a stronger squad for a game he expects to be “physical”, but instead he will count on the San Siro crowd to give the last men standing a lift.
“We’ve got 50,000 fans on our side and the lads will respond with a great game,” Allegri added. “Three important points for our future in the Champions League are at stake and there is the right atmosphere to go and get them.
“We’ve got to look to win against a side who are very solid in defence, and I'm not only referring to their defenders as such. They are very physical and very strong in attack too.”
