Jonjo Shelvey apologises for mistakes

Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey apologised to his own supporters after a couple of big mistakes handed his former club Liverpool two goals in a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium.

On a topsy-turvy night for Shelvey, he also scored the opener for the home side and set up Michu for a late leveller, but struggled to find a silver lining in his performance after his mistakes handed Daniel Sturridge and Victor Moses first half goals.

“I just want to say sorry to the Swansea fans for two bad mistakes,” Shelvey told Sky Sports. “I have gifted Liverpool the draw really and we wanted better than that.

“We started tremendously, getting the goal, but then I’ve made two mistakes. I showed a bit of character, getting on the ball and setting the goal up. It’s a bit of a relief I suppose, but I’m still very disappointed.

“I just can’t stop thinking about the two mistakes. You want to hide where no one can see you, but it’s happened to great players in their time. It’s a horrible feeling, you don’t want to wish it on anybody, even your worst enemy.”

Swansea manager Michael Laudrup offered plenty of support to the distraught midfielder he signed from Liverpool during the summer, but he hopes it will serve as a learning experience for the 21-year-old.

“You go from heaven to hell in just a couple of minutes, scoring a goal in a very important game  after two minutes but then you give away a goal and another one with a ball lost,” said Laudrup.

“We have to remember he is only 21-years-old. I told him (at half time) 'there are still 45 minutes, you have to learn from this and pull yourself together', and I think he did great.

“He will become stronger out of this, his reaction in the second half was excellent. We had to perform better in the second half and the boys did a good job. We got the equaliser, we could have won the game but I'm pleased with the result after all.”

Shelvey’s former manager Brendan Rodgers was equally sympathetic when offering an assessment of his former starlet’s eventful evening, as he backed the player he sold this summer to mature into a star at Swansea.

“Jonjo is a very good player and you could see that in his first goal,” stated Rodgers. “I didn’t really want him to go in the summer, but he needed to go in order to improve. His mistakes led to our goals obviously, but he will be better for that experience. He will develop into a very good young player.”
