Report: FIFA investigating Joel Campbell

FIFA will investigate Costa Rica forward Joel Campbell for faking a foul that led to a yellow card for United States defender Matt Besler, according to Costa Rican newspaper Al Día.

Costa Rica is also in danger of being punished for its fans' use of laser pointers and booing the American national anthem before last week's World Cup qualifying match, according to the newspaper.

Costa Rican Football Federation official Juan Carlos Roman told Al Día that the Ticos could be forced to play their next home World Cup qualifier, against Mexico on Oct. 15, before an empty stadium as punishment.

FIFA had previously warned Costa Rica following similar crowd actions before a match against Panama.

Playing without the boisterous Costa Rica fans would be a boost for Mexico, which is in fifth place in the final CONCACAF qualifying group and is in danger of failing to reach the World Cup. Costa Rica has already qualified to play in Brazil next summer.

Besler received a yellow card against Costa Rica after Campbell appeared to walk behind the U.S. center back and then drop to the ground after little to no contact.

The U.S. national team released a highlight video of the match that revealed the incident that led to the yellow card:

Because it was his second yellow card of the World Cup qualifying campaign, Besler was suspended for Tuesday's win against Mexico. The Americans were unable to appeal Besler's suspension, according to CONCACAF rules.

FIFA has informed the Costa Rican federation of the probe into Campbell, Al Día reported. The investigation could lead to a fine for Campbell.

Besler expressed his feelings on the yellow-card decision on Twitter last week:

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann complained before the Costa Rica match that the Mexican officiating crew could impact the U.S. roster for the Americans' next game against Mexico.

Striker Jozy Altidore and defender/midfielder Geoff Cameron also picked up yellow-card suspensions while playing against Costa Rica.

"It kind of just confirmed my fears before the game with the yellow card issue," said Klinsmann.
