Black admits breaching gambling laws

Rangers midfielder Ian Black has been banned for the next three matches and fined £7,500 after he admitted betting against his own team on three occasions.

Ian Black celebrates his goal in the victory over Albion Rovers on July 28.
Black admitted betting against his own clubs.

Black was also handed a suspended seven-match ban, having been given a Scottish Football Association (SFA) notice of complaint for alleged breaches of rules on gambling last month.

The former Inverness and Hearts player bet against his own team three times, although the SFA had already noted that there was no suggestion the 28-year-old had sought to influence results for financial benefit.

The midfielder's lawyer, Liam O'Donnell, said in a statement: “I wish to clarify that Ian Black received a censure in respect of betting on 147 games that did not involve his own team.

“He received a ten-match ban (seven suspended to the end of the season) in relation to 13 games involving his own team. In fairness the general nature of these bets was relatively small sums on fixed-odds coupons and multiple-game accumulators.”

Black had represented Rangers in a 4-0 Ramsdens Cup victory over Albion Rovers on one of the dates in question, and the club has not yet said whether it will take action against the player.

A club statement on Thursday read: “Rangers Football Club notes today's verdict by the Judicial Panel which has imposed a ten-match ban and £7,500 fine on Ian Black.

“Three of the matches will be served immediately -- meaning the player would miss games against Arbroath, Queen of the South and Forfar -- and a further seven games will be suspended until the end of the 2013-14 season.

“Black would be free to return to action against Stenhousemuir on Saturday, September 28, 2013.”
