Shay Given 'frustrated' at Aston Villa

Shay Given is "frustrated" at a lack of first-team action at Aston Villa, amid concerns he will be unable to leave the club this season because of the £3 million-a-year contract which is pricing him out of a loan move.

• Hughes: England's Villa void

The Republic of Ireland international is keen to make a fresh start away from Villa Park and has been told by manager Paul Lambert he can join a Championship club in the emergency loan window.

But Villa want interested parties to pay a significant proportion of the 37-year-old's £60,000-a-week salary.

Given saw a possible move to Liverpool on loan fizzle out before the transfer deadline because the Merseyside club were only prepared to pay a small percentage of his salary.

The 'keeper is one of the few remaining high-profile players seemingly seeking a way out, following the departures of Stephen Ireland and Darren Bent.

Given has not played a competitive game since Villa lost 2-1 at Millwall in the FA Cup in January and has fallen further down the pecking order behind first-choice 'keeper Brad Guzan, following the £3 million signing of Jed Steer from Norwich City in the summer.

"Of course it's just frustrating not playing. It's hard to keep training and know there's no game at the end of the week," he said in the Irish Times.

"Things can change quickly in football with injuries and suspensions and if I get an opportunity I've got to be ready to take it if that hopefully comes along. I'm fit as a fiddle and feel really sharp. I'm just raring to get that chance.

"I played in Stiliyan Petrov's testimonial in front of 60,000 fans at the weekend and as a player that's all you want to do, to show people you've still got the ability to play in the Premier League."
