Jonas Olsson boosted by new signings

Jonas Olsson believes West Bromwich Albion's transfer deadline day business will help blow away the early season relegation concerns at the Hawthorns.

Jonas Olsson has hailed Steve Clarke's transfer business this summer.

Evans: Transfer review

Albion's form from the turn of the year and a return of one point from their opening three league games, which leaves the club at the foot of the Premier League, raised serious concerns about their ability to retain their status in the top flight.

Central defender Olsson believes it was vital to alter the dynamic of the dressing room with new signings after a start in which Albion have failed to score a league goal.

The Sweden international has been encouraged by the arrival of Stephane Sessegnon, Victor Anichebe and Morgan Amalfitano a week after recruiting Sinclair from Manchester City.

And he believes the new faces at the club will bring about a quick change in fortunes for head coach Steve Clarke when the Premier League resumes after the international break.

"It was important to the dynamic of the dressing room to bring people in. You need it for competition. You get a different take on things with different voices and qualities in a dressing room," he said.

"It’s not just about replacing players who have left. Healthy competition makes you perform better. It’s vital in football. It makes you stronger and raises your game."

Olsson is convinced the loan signing of Sinclair and the return of Nicolas Anelka, after the French striker threatened to retire earlier this season, will be crucial to the club's progress.

"Scott Sinclair coming in was a major boost. I knew the club was looking for a winger with pace and, for me, he’s one of the best wingers in the league. He’s a great signing for us," Olsson said.

Anelka missed the goalless draw at Everton after being given compassionate leave following the death of a close friend.

The club’s highest-profile summer recruit hinted he could quit completely but was back for the home defeat to Swansea last week.

And Olsson said: "Nico had a great pre-season. We know what he can do. He’s a top professional, a top player and very fit for his age."
