Phil Jagielka wants preseason deadline

Phil Jagielka has called for the summer transfer window to shut before the start of the season -- despite his belief that Everton had a successful deadline day.

Jagielka wants squads confirmed before the Premier League kicks off.
Jagielka wants squads confirmed before the Premier League kicks off.

The club captain saw Romelu Lukaku, Gareth Barry and James McCarthy arrive as Marouane Fellaini and Victor Anichebe left on a busy evening on September 2.

But Jagielka has echoed the thoughts of his manager Roberto Martinez in arguing that transfer activity and speculation in the early weeks of the season is unsettling.

Martinez is one of several Premier League managers to state their belief that the window should close in August, before the Premier League season kicks off -- and Jagielka agrees.

“It is strange starting the season, playing a few games, and knowing that potentially a few of the players are going to leave,” the 31-year-old centre-back told the Liverpool Echo.

“I would like it to be moved two weeks earlier so that when you start the season, you know they are the players you have got.

“The squad has become stronger in numbers but time will tell. It looks good and the manager has done well.”

McCarthy arrived from Wigan for £13 million, while fellow midfielder Barry came from Manchester City and striker Lukaku from Chelsea, both on a season’s loan.

Belgium midfielder Fellaini was sold to Manchester United for £27.5 million, and forward Anichebe went to West Brom for an initial fee of £5 million, which could rise to £6 million with add-ons.

“Felli has been a fantastic player for Everton and we wish him all the best,” Jagielka said.

“I don’t think anyone would have a bad word to say about him.

“We hope we’ve got players in who are hungry to play football.

“I know Gaz (Barry) very well and he’s a fantastic player and James McCarthy played very well for Wigan last year.

“I hope the manager can get us playing how he wants to and we can score some goals to get up the league table.”
