Low set to extend Germany contract

Germany coach Joachim Low is set to prolong his contract with the German FA (DFB) until 2016, according to reports.

• Rodden: Arsenal's Ozil shows his quality

Low, 53, joined the Germany set-up as an assistant to then-coach Jurgen Klinsmann in 2004, taking over when Klinsmann left after the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Since then, Low, his assistant coach Hansi Flick and national team general manager Oliver Bierhoff have overseen the development of the national team into one of the world’s top sides, although they are yet to end their 17-year wait for a major trophy.

The trio are currently under contract until 2014. Discussions over their futures began in recent weeks, and are set to be concluded once Germany have secured their place in Brazil.

“I have, until now, not held any talks with the DFB,” Low told football magazine kicker on Sunday. “But my agent spoke to general secretary Helmut Sandrock and, in doing so, determined two or three milestones.”

It is widely believed Low will sign a new deal until 2016, and he added: “It will be before the World Cup.”

Wolfgang Niersbach, the DFB president, is also eager to renew Low’s deal, and told kicker “both sides have requests” and “I am aware of Low’s ideas”.

The magazine speculated that the deal could include a release clause in case Germany underperform in Brazil -- or if they win the trophy and the coach decides to bring an end to his spell in charge.

Germany currently top World Cup qualifying group C and, with three games remaining, hold a five-point advantage over Sweden and need two wins from their last three games to be sure of going to Brazil. They beat Austria 3-0 in Munich on Friday.

In the last 15 World Cups, Germany have reached the semi-final stage 11 times but have not won the trophy since 1990, when they beat Argentina 1-0 in Franz Beckenbauer’s last game as the German coach.

They last won an international trophy in 1996, lifting the European Championship trophy in England.
