Luiz left feeling sorry for Schwarzer

David Luiz felt sorry for Chelsea teammate Mark Schwarzer after his Brazil team put more goals past the veteran Socceroos goalkeeper than he'd ever conceded in 108 previous international matches.

The last line of the defence in a totally outclassed Socceroos outfit, Schwarzer could do little as Brazil netted three goals in each half in their 6-0 win at the Mane Garrincha stadium in Brasilia on Saturday (Sunday AEST).

Not since Australia's 4-0 loss to Germany at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa has the 40-year-old conceded so many in a game.

Playing next year's World Cup hosts Brazil on their home turf, and on Brazilian independence day no less, presented a mighty challenge and the Socceroos were found wanting.

Schwarzer said before the match there had been a bit of banter in Chelsea's Stamford Bridge changerooms between him and Brazilian teammates Luiz and Oscar, who was injured for the clash.

Luiz, who Schwarzer referred to a "real joker", revealed he has become close friends with the Australian since his July move from Fulham.

"He is a fantastic guy and a fantastic player," said defender Luiz.

"I have a great friendship with him. He is an example for me.

"He has been a professional player for 22 years. I feel sorry for him but I wish him the best and hope that he has a great World Cup next year."

Luiz, who said it was unfair to lay the blame the result on Schwarzer, said Australia were exposed to the level of damage the five-time world champions were capable of.

"It was a very difficult game for them [Australia]," the 26-year-old said.

"We put a lot of pressure on them, and also the fact we were playing at home made it so difficult.

"Australia saw today what Brazil is capable of when we play like this.

"It was a fantastic game for us."

The Selecao will now turn their attention to Portugal, who they face in three days time in an friendly match in Boston.
