Cahill boosted by Moldova scalp

LONDON -- Gary Cahill said that England's 4-0 World Cup qualifying win against Moldova can be used as a springboard to qualify for Brazil 2014.

• Brewin: Lambert continuing to answer SOS call
• Wade: England 4-0 Moldova: Player grades

England lead Group H with a game in hand following the comfortable win at Wembley and Montenegro's failure to beat Poland in Warsaw.

Roy Hodgson's side must now travel to Ukraine on Tuesday before hosting Montenegro and Poland, three games which they need to get positive results in if they are going to be certain of booking a place in the finals next summer.

But Cahill said there was a positive feeling among the players after putting injuries to Wayne Rooney, Glen Johnson and Daniel Sturridge behind them to brush aside Moldova with ease.

"There was an expectation level of getting the job done convincingly," Cahill said. "I think we did that and now we can get ready and prepare for Tuesday.

"The mood in the camp is good, it is always good off the back of a good performance. We've seen [Montenegro's] draw as well but we're not going to change what we have got to do now. The targets have been set. We know it is going to be tough on Tuesday but we need to go out there and try to get a win.

"We have got to be confident. We have had a good result [against Moldova] and we have got to get another one. I've been there before and it is a hostile atmosphere but a lot of these lads are used to that. It is going to be tough, we know it is going to be tough but we have got the players capable of getting a result."

Cahill was happy with the performance of a changed England front line as Southampton striker Rickie Lambert scored one and assisted two on his full debut.

It also saw Manchester United striker Welbeck, who will miss the trip to Ukraine after being booked, continue his impressive transformation from a promising young talent into an integral part of the national set-up as he scored either side of half time to allow manager Roy Hodgson to make changes with Tuesday's qualifier in mind.

"I thought we moved the ball really well and created lots of chances," Cahill added. "In games like that the last 20 minutes die off because you have the game won but there were some great individual performances and it was a positive result.

"I'm sure [Welbeck] will be pleased with the two [goals] and Rickie poached a goal at the back post and set up two as well so it has been a great start for him.

"The only disappointment is that we will be without [Welbeck] on Tuesday which is a blow for us because he is a big player."
