Extra security in San Jose for U.S. team

The Costa Rican police force will put 500 agents in and around the Estadio Nacional and key gathering places in San Jose for Friday's CONCACAF qualifying rematch between the United States and Costa Rica, chief of police Juan Jose Andrade said during a press conference in San Jose on Thursday.

Andrade said the agency would provide extra staffing from 8 a.m. ET until early dawn on Saturday morning, if necessary, should there be fan incidents. He added that there would also be extra vigilance throughout the country wherever large groups of fans would be gathering to watch the match.

Costa Rican fans greeted the U.S. team bus in San Jose Tuesday night with jeers, eggs and chants such as "No Fair Play."

"Always in police work you prepare for the worst of the extremes," Andrade said, adding that the security includes tactics officials, security inside the stadium and police on motorcycles and bicycles. "All the matches of the Costa Rica national team are handled with top level security."

The U.S. beat Costa Rica, 1-0, five months ago in blizzard-like conditions in Colorado and CONCACAF denied a formal protest from the Costa Ricans that the fixture be postponed due to the bad weather.

On Wednesday, U.S. national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann defended the decision to play on this past March, saying that he “didn’t call God to give us some snow.”

The U.S. has never won a qualifying match in Costa Rica and the two teams meet in the CONCACAF 2014 World Cup qualifier on Sept. 6 (ESPN Deportes Radio, 10 p.m. ET).

The U.S., first in the final round of CONCACAF hexagon qualifying, takes on Mexico on Sept. 10 in Columbus (ESPN, WatchESPN, ESPN Deportes Radio, 8 p.m.)

The U.S. has won its past 12 matches and leads the CONCACAF group with 13 points from six Hexagonal qualifying matches. Klinsmann's team is coming off a recent Gold Cup championship victory.
