Navas backs Casillas arrival at City

Barcelona manager refuses to rule out a move for the unsettled Real Madrid 'keeper

Jesus Navas has claimed that Iker Casillas would be a good signing for Manchester City, as the fallout from the Real Madrid captain’s row with Jose Mourinho last season continues.

• Cox: Is Joe Hart really in decline?

Casillas, who Mourinho first dropped for Antonio Adan and then replaced with Diego Lopez, has not regained his first-team spot at Madrid even with Carlo Ancelotti as head coach this term.

Meanwhile, City No. 1 Joe Hart has been increasingly questioned after starting the season making high-profile errors against Scotland and Cardiff City.

Navas told AS that he liked the idea of his Spain captain joining him at Eastlands.

"You always want all good players at your team," Navas said. "We are not going to discover Iker just now. We all know the great 'keeper he is, and the importance he has inside the team. At City there are great 'keepers, but Iker would be a great reinforcement."

Casillas' lack of first-team action looks set to cost him his place in the Spain side for Friday’s World Cup qualifier in Finland, with Barcelona’s Victor Valdes being tipped to start the game.

La Roja coach Vicente del Bosque told reporters after training in Helsinki on Thursday that he had made his decision already, but would not share it until the team was named closer to kick-off.

"We have already decided who will be the goalkeeper in the game," Del Bosque said. "But we want to tell them first."

Such careful communication was not always a forte of Mourinho, according to Adan, who is currently without a club having been released by Madrid last week.

The 26-year-old told La Sexta that he had been bitterly disappointed to learn Mourinho reacted to Casillas’ injury in January 2013 by signing Lopez, when he had assumed he was set for a long-term place in the team.

"I was training as normal, without knowing anything of Diego and then I learned about his signing from the media," Adan said. "I would have liked it a lot if Mourinho had explained this signing to me. When Iker was injured I was not allowed be Real Madrid’s goalkeeper."

The Madrid native said it was a wrench to leave the Bernabeu club having come all the way up through the ranks there, but he was happy to have at least appeared in the first-team.

"I am sad to leave Real Madrid but I know something good will arrive," he said. "I have had ups and downs, but I have played a lot and I will always have that."
