Germany trails despite transfer records

German clubs spent significantly less than other top leagues around Europe this summer despite a number of transfer records having been broken in the Bundesliga.

Mario Gotze was a record transfer between German clubs.
Mario Gotze was a record transfer between German clubs.

The 18 clubs in the Bundesliga spent €261.1 million over the summer -- surpassing the €238 million invested the previous year -- while Mario Gotze became the most expensive player to move within Germany when Bayern Munich paid his €37 million release clause to sign him from Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern and Dortmund, the two Champions League finalists, spent a total of €110 million alone -- nearly 50% of the division’s total -- and averaged over €15 million per signing, with BVB’s most notable arrival the €27.5 million signing of Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, investment in other top leagues was significantly higher, with Real Madrid’s move for Gareth Bale for a reported €100 million the most significant.

Four other players went for €50 million or more, with Edinson Cavani joining PSG from Napoli for €64.5 million, Monaco spending €60 million to bring in Radamel Falcao from Atletico Madrid and Barcelona paying €57 million for Santos’ Neymar.

Finally, on deadline day, Arsenal spent €50 million to take Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, making him the most expensive German player of all time.

Those five deals total €331.5 million -- €69.9 million more than the 18 Bundesliga clubs combined, despite their average spend of €1.95 million representing a significant rise on the €600,000 average of a decade ago.

Bundesliga clubs also brought in a record sum -- €211.5 million -- with Andre Schurrle becoming the most expensive player ever to leave Germany when he joined Chelsea for €23 million.
