Borriello, Gilardino pleased to stay put

Roma forward Marco Borriello was presented with a cake to satisfy his hunger for games on the first day of training post-transfer window on Tuesday.

Marco Borriello: Former AC Milan striker
Borriello aims to impress new Roma boss Rudi Garcia.

Serie A transfers

The Italian forward was subject to intense transfer speculation, with his reluctance to join former club Genoa ultimately preventing Alberto Gilardino’s and Fabio Quagliarella moving on from Genoa and Juventus respectively in a proposed three-way deal on deadline day.

The trio were all sat on packed suitcases right up until the gong sounded to signal the end of the summer transfer window. With Juventus reluctant to let Quagliarella leave and Borriello keen to prove himself to Roma coach Rudi Garcia, the merry-go-round did not revolve, not so much to the players’ regret.

“Nobody is hungrier than you. Marco one of us. Come on Roma,” was written in icing on a cake presented to Borriello and photographed by team-mate Dodo in the dressing room at Roma’s Trigoria training ground. The 31-year-old is unlikely to have eaten a slice, though, as he has a point to prove to Garcia, who is leaning towards Francesco Totti, Adem Ljajic and Gervinho for his attack.

Gilardino also seems hungry and keen to win over the Genoa fans.

“I’m delighted to be staying at Genoa,” he tweeted. “I’ll give everything I’ve got for this shirt.”

After scoring four goals in 14 appearances for the Rossoblu during the 2011-12 season, he was loaned out to Bologna last year, where he scored 13 times in 36 games. The 2011-12 season was his first campaign since 2007-08 with AC Milan in which he failed to make double figures, although he has kept his place in the Italy squad almost entirely throughout that run.

As for Quagliarella, a move away from the Old Lady became a much less likely prospect after Alessandro Matri was sold to Milan. He will now fight for his place along with Fernando Llorente and Sebastian Giovinco, with Carlos Tevez and Mirko Vucinic starting the season as coach Antonio Conte’s first-choice forwards.
