Everton: Fellaini did not sacrifice £4m

Everton have denied that they will only receive £23.5 million from Marouane Fellaini’s transfer to Manchester United, insisting that the Belgian has commanded a £27.5 million fee.

Fellaini completed his move from Goodison Park to Old Trafford in the final minutes of the transfer window on Monday and United were then criticised for paying more than had been necessary five weeks earlier.

The midfielder had a £23.5 million release clause, which expired at the end of July and which United had opted not to activate. By negotiating in September instead, they ended up agreeing a £27.5 million fee.

However, after his transfer was ratified, reports emerged claiming that, by requesting a transfer and waiving loyalty bonuses supposedly worth £4 million, Fellaini had only cost United £23.5 million.

Everton, though, are adamant that is not the case, with the club's communications director, Alan Myers, writing on Twitter that the higher price will be paid in full.

At that amount, Fellaini has become the fifth most expensive player in United’s history. Moreover, while he lost loyalty bonuses by leaving Everton, he is likely to have been given a higher salary at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, the player has spoken of his delight at reuniting with Moyes.

Speaking to MUTV on Tuesday, Fellaini said: "I am thrilled to sign for Manchester United. I have known the manager for many years now and I have a lot of respect for his way of working. When I was given the opportunity to work with him again, I jumped at the chance.

"I had a fantastic time at Everton and I’d like to thank all the fans and staff there for everything they have done for me, but being a Manchester United player is something that every player dreams of and I believe that I can make a real contribution to the team’s efforts to win trophies in the future."

Moyes added: "I have worked with Marouane for five years and I’m delighted he has decided to join Manchester United. He is a player with great ability and strength and I think he will make a real difference to our squad."
