Roma had been keen to sign Fabio Quagliarella.

Roma’s director of sport Walter Sabatini held talks with Genoa’s president Enrico Preziosi earlier on Monday to discuss the return of Borriello to the Rossoblu; however, the Giallorossi wanted Quagliarella from Juventus to fill the void.

According to Italy’s Sky Sport 24, Juve coach Antonio Conte called the whole thing off. Already upset at losing Alessandro Matri to AC Milan and Emanuele Giaccherini to Sunderland, he phone his club’s transfer advisors located in a Milan hotel, the scene of Italy's transfer deadline day negotations, to block the sale of Quagliarella, effectively ending Borriello and Gilardino’s hopes of moving on in the process.

“It’s a very complicated agreement,” Giuseppe Bozzo, who represents both Gilardino and Quagliarella, told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “There are too many heads to bring together."

Genoa nevertheless strengthened their attack on deadline day with the earlier signings of former Napoli forward Emanuele Calaio and Adrian Stoian from Chievo, with Antonio Floro Flores leaving to join Serie A rivals Sassuolo.
