Marseille finally sign Florian Thauvin

Marseille have confirmed the signing of attacking midfielder Florian Thauvin from Lille.

Thauvin failed to make a single appearance for Lille.

Thauvin, 20, trained just once with the Lille first team this summer before refusing to participate in sessions as he attempted to force a move out of the club he joined for €3.5 million on a four-and-a-half year deal last January.

After being allowed to finish last season on loan at his former side Bastia, Thauvin was unhappy to find Rudi Garcia replaced by Rene Girard as coach at Lille this summer, while the club's failure to qualify for European football convinced him he should join OM, even though he was also being pursued by Newcastle United, who had attempted to sign him last winter.

After initial bids of €5.5 million and €8 million with a €2 million bonus were rejected, Lille president Michel Seydoux finally accepted OM's offer, which will eventually meet the €15 million fee the 2010-11 French double winners were looking for.

"Of course we're very happy to have a positive outcome to these long negotiations with our Lille counterparts," OM president Vincent Labrune said. "I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the courtesy and quality of the exchanges that I have had in recent days with Michel Seydoux. They have allowed us to come to this favourable result.

"Finally, and above all, we're delighted that Florian can bring all his talent to the team. He has all the qualities to conquer the hearts of our fans, who -- I'm certain -- cannot be unmoved by a player who has shown over the last few weeks his desire to wear the Marseille shirt."
