United close in on Marouane Fellaini

Manchester United are making progress towards completing a deal for Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini within the next few hours.

Okwonga: Manchester United fail to emerge

United boss David Moyes has been tracking Fellaini and team-mate Leighton Baines for much of the summer.

Sources have told ESPN that Moyes is on course to sign Belgium international Fellaini before the transfer window shuts at 11pm BST on Monday, while a deal for Baines also remains a possibility.

An offer of around £25 million is expected to be enough to secure the midfielder, who moved to Goodison Park for an initial £15 million from Standard Liege in September 2008, when Moyes was Everton’s manager.

United have also agreed to pay Athletic Bilbao the requested €36m transfer fee for midfielder Ander Herrera.

Meanwhile, Everton, who are understood to have rejected an approach from West Brom for striker Victor Anichebe on Monday, are still chasing targets of their own.

A fresh bid for Wigan’s James McCarthy is expected before the deadline, with Latics chairman Dave Whelan insisting he wants £14 million for the midfielder.

But reports in Portugal suggest Everton are also keen on Porto’s Brazilian midfielder Fernando.

A late move for the 26-year-old could yet happen, but suggestions that a fee has already been agreed with the Portuguese champions are premature.

Gareth Barry is another target, although Manchester City would rather sell rather than loan the midfielder -- who is in the final year of his contract and could leave for nothing next summer.

City are also reluctant to subsidise the 32-year-old’s reported £90,000-a-week salary in any move -- meaning that Barry would have to take a pay cut to move to Goodison Park.
