James McCarthy 'to cost Everton £14m'

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has told Everton he wants £14 million for midfielder James McCarthy.

James McCarthy impressed for Wigan during the 2012-13 season
McCarthy joined Wigan from Hamilton Academical in 2009.

Everton are chasing a deal for the Republic of Ireland international as they face the prospect of losing Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United.

Fellaini and team-mate Leighton Baines have been tracked by United all summer, with sources saying that both could move to Old Trafford before the transfer window shuts at 11pm BST on Monday.

Whelan revealed on Sunday night that he had rejected two bids from Everton for McCarthy -- with a third expected on deadline day -- indicating that the second was for around £12 million.

The Wigan chairman is expecting a third bid from Everton boss Roberto Martinez if a deal to sell Fellaini is struck.

“Roberto is chasing James. If Everton sell Fellaini, they are going to come in again for our boy," Whelan said.

“It depends whether Fellaini goes today. I have heard that he’s definitely going.

“If Fellaini goes, Everton are going to get their £30 million or whatever.

“Roberto knows what James is valued at, so they've got to come back in with the right amount. You’ve got to be talking £14 million or maybe a little more.”

Everton have refused to comment on the prospect of buying McCarthy or selling either Fellaini or Baines.

Martinez has remained in contact with Whelan over a deal for McCarthy, though, as Everton and Wigan attempt to agree a fee for the midfielder.
