Sergio Busquets doubt for Spain

Barcelona head coach Tata Martino lamented his side's second half display as they held on to a 3-2 victory at Valencia on Sunday.

Sergio Busquets is a serious doubt for Spain’s World Cup qualifier against Finland after injuring a thigh in Sunday night’s 3-2 win at Valencia.

Busquets finished the game in discomfort, with Barca having already earlier made all three substitutions, and is to undergo further examination at the Camp Nou on Monday.

His absence would give Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque a headache, given that other deep midfield options Xabi Alonso, Thiago Alcantara and Javi Martinez have all been left out of the initial squad for the game due to injury.

Barca’s club statement suggested Busquets may still be able to join up with the La Roja squad this week.

"Sergio Busquets finished the match against Valencia in pain," it said. "The Catalan player sustained a knock to his right thigh and he’ll undergo additional tests on Monday to determine the exact extent of his possible injury."

Should the World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 winner not make it, then Del Bosque may be forced to field either one or both of Atletico Madrid’s inexperienced duo Mario Suarez and Koke in his starting XI.

Another option could be a recall for Javi Martinez, who returned from injury to score for Bayern Munich against Chelsea in Friday’s European Super Cup, however initial reports suggested he was not yet ready to be called up for international duty.

Spain currently lead World Cup 2014 qualifying Group I, a point ahead of France, with four games left to play. They have only one qualifier during the upcoming break, so play Chile in a friendly in Geneva on Tuesday September 10.
